For back pain in pregnancy, there is much that can be done, and most women respond very well to treatment. During a visit, Dr. Swedan devotes time to listening to patients about what causes and relieves the pain and how it relates to activity levels, sleep, work and overall health. A thorough exam is performed including posture and gait, range of motion, strength, reflexes, sensations, and evaluation of tender areas. A diagnosis is made, and in the discussion of the best treatment protocol, the OB is consulted if needed. Pain relieving techniques are discussed and individualized to each patient and stage of pregnancy. Techniques include topical applications, exercise and positioning, bracing, injections if appropriate, and lifestyle and activity modifications. Referrals to physical therapists (or sometimes other health and wellness practitioners) experienced in treating pregnant women are also extremely beneficial.
