Dr. Nadya Swedan is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist (physiatrist) who offers patients individualized assessment for treatment and prevention of pain and injuries. These include spine and sports injuries, postural, overuse, pelvic and pregnancy related pain syndromes. Dr. Swedan specializes in recommendations for fitness, work, and home life activities that promote maximum health and wellness. These treatment strategies and philosophies are outlined in her book: "The Active Woman's Health and Fitness Handbook"(Perigee, 2003). She is also author and editor of the professional book: "Women's Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation" (Lippencott, 2001). She is a graduate of Brown University, University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and a physical medicine and rehabilitation residency at Northwestern University's Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

Dr. Nadya has written and lectured in various educational and professional settings. As a member of the advisory board of Shape magazine, she is quoted several times yearly and designed an exercise plan that was featured in the July, 2008 issue. Dr. Swedan also continues to answer questions for Fitness and has been quoted in numerous other magazines, including Glamour, Runner's World, Natural Health, Elle, and Prevention. She also has had several TV appearances, including News 12 and CN 8 interviews, and has served as an advisor to the Women's Sports Foundation. She is a medical advisor to Drive 495, an exclusive golf health club in Manhattan, and is a member of the board of the Don Monti Cancer Foundation.

Athletics have always been important to her. Her past sports history includes varsity swimming and tennis in high school, and varsity rowing in college. During medical school she taught aerobics, developing an appreciation for fitness classes which occupied much of her free time in residency. At the end of her first pregnancy, she was featured in "Pilates for Pregnancy", a DVD which she helped create (urbanwellness.com). Prior to becoming a mother of three, she was an avid recreational triathlete, finishing consistently in the top 10 of her age group in local triathlons, including a few first finishes in sprint distances. She even completed the infamous "Escape from Alcatrez" triathlon in 2001. She now pays regular visits to the gym to maintain her strength so that she can ski, swim, and play tennis with her family.

As her professional experience and practice evolves, she remains a strong advocate of avoiding surgery. Although she works alongside orthopedic surgeons, she maintains an independent practice with the conviction that most injuries can heal without surgery. She is routinely referred patients who have been recommended to have surgery but want to explore nonsurgical options. She maintains an individualized multifaceted approach working with patient expectations and behaviors to develop the optimum plan for pain prevention and overall health and fitness.
